Slavery..
Throughout Africa, Islam and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade
INTRODUCTION..
Slavery had a huge impact on our history. Led to wealth for Europeans and devastating lives for Africans. It was not only apart of American history, but also practiced in Islam and within Africa itself.
Africa Before Slavery..
Africa history did not begin in slavery. They had well structured lifestyles. Before the slave trade, African leaders saw Europeans as equal as themselves. Africans lived just as well as the Europeans that captured them. Lived in great cities and small towns on countrysides. Like most of us, they honored their parents and adored their kids, worked hard, and enjoyed making music, arts and crafts. Africans lived in a way similar to Indians such as hunting to survive and dancing and having celebrations almost every night. Their lives consisted of a wide variety of ethnics. Spoke many different languages and worshiped through different religions. Africans were even skilled in subjects like medicine, mathematics and astronomy.
There were many types of slavery within the African society. Chattel slaves were traded as property. Had no rights and performed labor such as sexual favors at their master's command. Debt bondage involved the use of people as collateral against debt. The debt could possibly be inherited across several generations. Forced labor, or 'unfree' labor, was based on the threat of violence against the laborer. These types of slavery could have had an influence on the Trans-Atlantic slave trade.
